Dr Alex Davies talks about using MLS Laser therapy in her practice.
My name is Doctor Alexandra Davies, I am the owner and principal dentist of Admire Dentistry in Arana Hills and we are a general dental practice. But over the last 18 months, I have gained a bit more of an interest in the TMD space.
What your favourite thing about using MLS Laser?
I’ve got a lot of patients, whether it’s TMD treatment or other types of impressions, whether it’s analogue or digital. We do have a lot of patients that come through not really being able to open their jaw and they say that they haven’t been able to get impressions very easily in the past or it’s been very traumatic because they can’t open wide. So, I find even just with one session of the MLS® Laser, they relax quite a bit, they can open their mouths and then we can get some really good records. And I think it’s such a positive experience for them that they become very trusting and really appreciate that we’ve, you know, brought that technology into the practice to make their treatment a lot better.
What have your patients said about the MLS Laser?
They’re really appreciative that we’ve gone that extra mile to bring that into the practice and even if it’s not just for TMD work. I’ve probably got a good example: I’ve got one patient who had a terrible traffic accident many, many years ago and she’s been put back together. But her… it’s amazing what they’ve done with her jaw. But she gets quite a bit of pain and normally during her check-up and clean appointments she has to have a lot of breaks. She takes Valium before the appointment just to get there and then she continues on it for the day because she just finds that she just needs to be medicated all day because she becomes… she’s in so much pain. So we’ve incorporated the laser into her treatment; we laser her before her treatment. She can keep her mouth open for the entire treatment. We laser her again at the end and she left feeling the calmest she’s ever felt, even without being on medication. She… we followed her up the next day. She was able to be productive that day. She still had no pain. She could not speak highly enough. And I think for her, you know, check-ups and cleans used to be a whole day out of her life, whereas now it’s just a normal part of her life. So you can really incorporate it into your general day-to-day. We do it a lot with longer appointments: post-op pain after tooth extractions, root canal therapy and all those sorts of things.
What would you say to practitioners who are considering using MLS Laser Therapy?
Do it! No, I think I’m… I really think it’s completely worth it, particularly if you’re getting into the TMD space; I think it’s a must. But like I said, you can really incorporate it into your practice, and I think if you’re a practice that really wants to go that extra mile and really enhance that patient care and really take care of them during their treatments. It really is just a nice integrated approach to have. So yeah, I couldn’t do without it now. I’m really glad we got it.
